I installed a new engine. Purged the engine. Seven lifters are rock solid, one feels different. If I push it is solid (and gap less than 0.5mm) for the three seconds mentioned in the procedure, but after 5 seconds the gap opens and the lifter looses its pressure while the other stays "hard".
Is the lifter o.k. (because of the three seconds mentioned in the procedure) or not?
Since doing an oil purge is so important for your engine's survival and you feel something isn't quite right like the soft lifter you described you would be far ahead of the game to just do an additional purge. It's easy enough to do. I always felt that a little more time spent doing a really good purge far out weighed the extra 15 minutes of time. On my last new engine I did the purger 3 times with 80-100 revolutions each. You could do them back to back after you catch your breath. :) I also do therm with little speed and can usually see 50-55 psi on the oil pressure gauge. Doing it this way I have never had a soft lifter.
For me the extra 15 minutes isn't worth the penalty if a lifter has air or oil isn't every where it should be on first start. I think this is one time where more is better. ;)
Some may view this as a tad excessive, but I like the old adage of; better safe than sorry.
