For five years each time I change the oil I've removed the magnetic plug and checked it per procedure without a problem. This time I could not get it loose and ended up stripping out the torx head. I'm reluctant to use an EZ out as I'm sure metal filings would contaminate the oil. I notice that the plug now being sold has a hex head so I'm wondering if this is a common problem. I've let it be for now hoping someone could suggest some way to get it loose.
thanks - Mike
Good news Michael,
These are easy to take out. You can do it one of two ways. You can usually garb the plug shoulder with a pair of small vise grips. Then while applying downward pressure have someone take an aluminum rod, set it on the plug shoulder and give it a rap or two and it usually comes right out. You can use a Dremel tool with a cut-off wheel and put a slot across the face and use a large screwdriver and that aluminum rod and give it a rap on the edge again and it should come right out. Absolutely do not cut so deep as to contact the case surface or the new plug will not seal. You can also use a heat gun or small butane torch to heat the case edge around the plug and this may help, but I usually don't find the necessary.

I would recommend a bit of everything everyone has suggested AND, run your engine up to normal operating temp. Spray the plug with some freeze spray that you can get from an electrical supplier so as to help shrink the plug. Give the plug a good whack using a steel rod against the plug and hit the rod with a hammer a couple of times, then quickly use a stud extractor to unscrew the plug before it warms up.
This is the guaranteed "belt and braces" way to remove the plug.
Like Mark said, you want the casing as HOT as possible and the plug itself as COLD as possible.
Heat will transfer through Aluminium quickly so don't dick around.
Be well set up and do it fast......good luck.
