Sticking valve

Hi

Has anybody (Roger) had any experience of sticking valves.

I think we may have had one today, although i've not seen the engine yet and the owner has started taking it apart.

It is a 912 ul with 730hrs.

    Hi Mark,

    That's pretty low hours for a sticking valve. It is possible, but is usually from doing something you shouldn't. Things like 100LL may cause a narrowing of a passage way or not using suitable oil. It is possible that some other mechanical problem is at issue. Why did they think they had a sticky valve which is fairly rare? Did they do a differential compression test?
    The valve guides can be reamed out.
    I would be interested to hear what you actually find once it is apart and a probable cause.
    I have seen a couple of people that thought they had a sticky valve, but was only something that got stuck under the valve from being sucked in.

    Hi Roger

    I've just been told it was a failed camshaft and not a sticking valve. I still haven't seen the engine, but it was taken down to Conrad and he has had a quick look at it.

    I can't believe we only spoke about this last week.

    It was a 912 ul with around 730 hrs.

    Has this engine ever had a prop strike in its history?

    Hi Roger

    I've just spoke to the owner and he has had the aircraft from new. It had 4 hours on it when he got it and there is no history of a prop strike.
