How long can one safely run a 912s wh

in 912 / 914 Technical Questions 13 years ago
lost coolent in flight with 912s had to fly at reduced power for over 5 minutes... is there a safe margin built into the engine?

    Hi Gerry,

    You engine could run as long as 30 min. without coolant. That said it should be at reduced power and watch the temps like a hawk. If the temps climb too high then the heads need to be sent off for hardness testing and a few other checks should be done. 5 min. at reduced power should have not been a big deal. Why did you loose coolant? The hose come off or split?

    Roger: tks for the response....hose clamp cut into hose .... should have used ABA style worm geared clamp instead of general purpose worm gear....hose was goodyear hi-miler blue which is a softer silcone 2 layer type...lesson learned.... stick to ABA type worm gear or constant pressure spring type ,,,Regards Gerry
