Oil change

I was watching as my mechanic operator end oil change. All was going well until he overfilled the tank with new oil. Rather than removing oil drain plug again, he siphoned out about 1/2 a quart of oil. He added oil back until oil was 1/2 way within range on the dipstick. (After burping) I ran the engine up and after getting to temp, shut down and checked the oil level. To my surprise, it was about a 1/2" below the LOW level on the dipstick. I added more oil.. My question is, did running up my engine cause any concerns since ultimately the oil was lower than the dipstick low?
I'd did get oil pressure on start up, though the oil pressure seems to bounce around depending on throttle RPM setting.

    Hi Peter,

    So long as there was oil on the dip stick on that start you'll be fine. Usually just add 3 qts. or 3 Lts. to the tank after the normal oil change and you should be up close to the top mark of the dip stick.

    Thank you. I would say he added about 2-1/2 quarts and after run up I added about another 1/4 of a quart, I'll keep an eye on the level. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't adding air to the system, but the pickup is from bottom of tank so I assume not. Thanks again

    Hi Roger:

    The oil pressure on a 912ULS equipped Sky Arrow began to increase from the always normal green arc 4 bar to the yellow arc 5.0 - 6.2 bar.(Almost red line on the VDO instrument.

    After burping, oil was a little over the top mark of the dip stick. Perhaps we overfilled the tank the last time we check oil level. Could this be causing the high oil pressure readings?

    Hi Angel,

    Since we have a dry sump engine the little higher level plays no part in the oil pressure. Usually oil pressure issues with VDO senders are just that sender problems. They aren't always a high longevity part. Some people remote mount their oil pressure senders to the fire wall to get them away from the engine vibration. The other item that has a small possibility is the oil pressure regulator spring and ball bearing if you have a slightly older engine or haven't changed yours out. So here is what you can do. You can replace the oil pressure sender and hopefully that will take care of the problem. My bet this will work. You can hook up a pressure test gauge on the oil pressure side and check it against the VDO sender. You can change out the oil pressure regulator plug screw, spring and get rid of the ball-bearing and use the new style mushroom looking part. This only takes about 10 minutes to change and it's very easy. The oil pressure plug screw is under the oil filter and about 2" to the left. It should have some safety wire on it.

    Roger.

    I purchased a new VDO oil pressure sender from Lockwood. Ran the engine before replacing the old one and oil pressure reading was yellow arc 5.0 - 6.2.

    Removed the old one and installed the new. Started the engine and the needle on the went all the way after the 10 bars reading.

    What am I missing?
