Follow up to the problem:
Finally got around to re-installing the carbs and synching the carbs. Extended ground runs at high RPMs were fine. I flew it for about 30 minutes and it ran great, seemed smoother than before. I guess the small flecks found in the float bowls were intermittingly obstructing the main jet.
