Broken Throttle Spring Bracket

Had to make an emergency landing yesterday as partial power loss not enough to stay airborn. Problem was the left carb throttle spring had abraded right through the eye of the lower/bracket attachment point and pinged off. Had an immediate drop of 200rpm with mild rough running but when I tried working the throttle open/closed I converted that to ok idle, rough partial power with full throttle as left carb remained closed. Managed a temporary patch with spare spring/safety wire to get home. Wondering if anyone else has experienced the lower attachment of the spring wearing right through the eye of the bracket? Amazing to me that has happened so quick, new motor with only 59hrs now. Checked right side and is fine. Engine runs well, very smooth, carbs balance done twice so far, last time 15 hrs ago. Other question, how easy is it to get a replacement bracket/spring? Will be phoning rotax dealer here in NZ tomorrow too.

    Hi Paul

    It is more common than you think. On our aircraft, as well as the spring cutting through the bracket, the bracket also cuts through the spring.

    It usually happens more on the same side, not sure why, but is always part of my daily inspection.

    You don't want to know how much Rotax charge for the nylon bush.

    Paul,

    The plastic bushings that go in the bracket will stop that wear. The bushings themselves will wear over time but not as fast as the metal to metal contact between the spring and the bracket. Don't know why Rotax charges so much for them. They are available from many other sources. One that comes to mind is Iglide plastic bushings. They can be bought in quantity or individually and the small one that fits the carb bracket is less than a dollar.

    Hi, do you have a size for these bushings or an Iglide part number perhaps.

    I would give them a try instead of having none.

    Anyone know what Rotax charges for these bushings?

    Kevin,

    The bushing from Rotax is about $10.00. I'm not sure of the size, but you can measure the hole that the spring goes in to get the O.D. of the bushing. Go to www.igus.com and look under metric flanged bushings. The sizes they offer range from way too small to way too big and anything in between. Not to mention different types such as double flanged, single flanged, etc. They advertise no minimum order and the small sizes are around a dollar each. You will need two per carb and although they have different Rotax part numbers, I think they are the same size.

    Paul,

    Three of the guys in my neighborhood all finished Rans S6S's in 2007. All three of us have had problems with the throttle springs wearing through the plastic "tophat" and cutting the bracket. The fix that was recommended to us by a local longtime Rotax operator was "put a drop of oil on the joint at each oil change". We have all three started that practice and had "no to minimal" wear since.

    One of the guys was worn completely through at about 65 hours. He also spends a lot more time running at low rpm to warm up his oil than the other two of us.
