Hi Jan,

You don't have to drain the oil, but this is a good time for an oil change. You are going to loose oil when you start pulling hoses off to re-route them.

You MUST do an oil purge when you are all done.

Thanks Roger,

I have read that I need a heat gun to open the thermostat when purging. Is this correct as the video on purging is not mentioning this.
When affirm, how do I know that the thermostat is open?

Do you know a compressor+pressure regulator for a reasonable price?

Hi Jan

The correct thing to do is like Roger says and do a full oil purge, although you won't need to do a full oil purge as you have not removed oil from the oil circuit inside the engine, you just want to make sure you have oil in the new oil lines and oil cooler and thermostat.

The easiest way is to fit all the oil pipes and thermostat and leave the oil pipe that fits onto the pump until last.

If you blow into the oil tank breather pipe you can push oil through the thermostat and cooler and fill the pipes with oil until it comes out of the end of the pipe before the pump, then, as the oil starts to come out of the pipe, fit it to the oil pump and secure it.

You should now turn your engine over by hand several times to make sure you have oil pressure. I find that by removing the top 4 spark plugs, you can turn the engine over quicker and easier and if there is a problem with the magneto wiring, it is a lot safer as the engine cannot start. You wouldn't know about a wiring problem until the engine fires up, but then it is too late.

Then replace your plugs and start the engine and monitor the oil pressure carefully for the first few minutes to make sure everything is working OK.

You don't need to open the thermostat with a heat gun, to get the housing up to temp to open the thermostat, you will probably melt everything else under the bonnet, and it not necessary.

I am not saying don't do a full oil purge, just I don't think it is necessary if you are fitting a thermostat.

I use a cheap compressor that has a regulator already built on it which cost around £100.

What I am saying is if you are removing the oil pipe, but the engine oil system is already full, then if you use your mouth and blow into the oil tank breather tube, you can pressurise the tank and force oil into the oil cooler and thermostat and when they are full and the oil comes out of the pipe, connect it to the pump and then prime the system by turning the prop.

If your oil tank is fairly low, it is no different than doing an oil change and then priming the system, just make sure you fill the pipes with oil and you have consistent oil pressure before you start the engine.
