Oil leak near to starter 912ULS

I have an oil leak near to the starter motor on my 912ULS. A few weeks ago I replaced the small starter with the HD version. Since then I have had a persistant oil leak from that area BUT I am convinced that it is not coming from where the starter fits onto the ignition housing. I did in fact take the starter off again, check the o-ring and carefully refit it again to no avail. I've obviously caused it though as it was perfect before I did the starter replacement! The leak appears to be coming somewhere from where the ignition housing joins the rear of the case, close to where the outer/ starboard starter motor mounting bolt is. It is hard to exactly pin point it as it tends to spread considerably in the airflow. The amount of oil is not enormous but is more than a few drops - after a couple of hours flying it makes a bit of a mess.
Any thoughts/ rectification ideas would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi Jonathan,
    did you install the screws that fill the holes normally used for the "standard" starter studs? see IPC page 9-2 (items # 38, 39 & 40)

    Hi Rob,
    Yes I have installed those two "extra" nuts and bolts - they were supplied with the new starter motor.

    Is the starter a Rotax part or the after-market version? The after-market starter does not have a seal on the shaft and will leak.
    No other screws loosened on the ignition housing during the starter installation?
    As a trial may seal the 2 "blanking" screws with loctite 5910 or 518???

    Yes, it is a brand new genuine Rotax part purchased at great expense!! The rubber o-ring was present and correct. I did not seal the blanking screws with anything, just nipped up the nyloc nuts quite tight. No other screws disturbed at all. I'm pretty sure that the oil is not coming from the "starter side" of the ignition housing. A chance it could be from the front end of the blanking screws but it does look more like the joint between the ignition housing and the case - but it is very hard to be sure of this.
    Just out of interest, do the blanking bolts pass through an oil chamber, in other words if they did happen to be left out would oil come pouring out of those holes?

    no, they don’t pass through the oil chamber so you would have had to try pretty hard to get a leak! (Somehow separating the 5910 seal between the housing and crankcase)
    You can use the dye/black light trick to find the source of the leak...
    sorry, anyone else run into this?
