Electric fuel pump

Hi, I fly the Kitfox 5 taidragger, 912 ULS . I have the older style rotax mechanical pump,I don't have the small pressure return line to the gascolator or header. I have an electric pump for a backup , only test run it in preflight. I have had no problems to date 300hrs. "knock on wood"

Van's RV-12 E-LSA with 912ULS has a "full-time" electric auxiliary fuel pump that operates all of the time - it has no direct control switch (however, a fuse can be pulled to deactivate it) and is "on" anytime the Master Switch is activated. Van's Aircraft's thinking (as I understand it) is that the electric pump's TBO will out-last the engine's TBO, the electric pump is on all of the time so that no pilot attention (or inattention) is needed, it is "safer" in that it is always backing up the engine-driven pump - particularly at low altitudes, it helps to avoid vapor-lock, and it is a simpler system to build and install.
As you might imagine, there is some discussion within the RV-12 builder ranks as to whether this is a good idea or not. Some builders are wiring in a direct control switch so that they can use the electric pump as they see fit - ultimatly, it is up to the builder/pilot (either post E-LSA certification or EAB-LSA).

Hi Jim,
A friend of mine recently fixed the fuel pressure problem on his aircraft by installing a Pierburg mechanical fuel pump. Are these pumps still available?

Ivor: to my knowledge, no. As I understand it, the company was sold and the new owner did not want to sell into the aviation market. I know an individual who is very knowlegable on that topic. You can find him on the Aerotrek website, West coast guy. He tried a "new" pump in his new Aerotrek and took it back off. He put a used Pierburg on his new plane and "solved" the problem.
I have the problem, (450 hrs on it, Aerotrek A220, 2008 vintage), a close-by friend has the problem in his Aerotrek, (Eurofox) and another just started having problems with his Eurofox, 2007 with 560 hrs. We are all trying to find a clear definition of the problem and solution.
