Last week I again synchronize the carburetors on my Rotax 912 UL powered Skyranger. After getting the carbs synchronized, I always find it difficult to safety-wire the throttle cables in the manner shown in the Rotax videos because of their location in my engine compartment and the status of my back . I am older now and just have a hell of a time contorting myself in the positions needed to accomplish this safety-wiring task on my aircraft. Is there a "gadget" available or alternative method to the Rotax safety-wire technique that can be used to fix the position of the throttle cables?

Hi James
I secure my cables by using heat shrink tubing.
I open the throttle fully so that it is pulled into the adjuster completely and then heat the heat shrink to secure the cable.
Just remember to put the heat shrink over the cable before you connect the throttle cable.

Mark: Thanks for your help. Your suggestion certainly is headed in the right direction for solving my problems but I do have some questions. Wouldn't your method require the throttle cable be removed from the carburetor and the adjuster assembly each time you synchronize the engine so that you can replace the heat shrink tube? Also, is it difficult to remove the old tube from the assembly when you plan to replace it?
Do you think that heat shrink tape could be used to do the same thing as the shrink tube and “safety†the throttle cable. That way, if you can get the old tape off, the throttle assembly would not have to be disassembled each time.

Hi James
Removing the old heat shrink is not a problem with some small sharp scissors. I use surgical scissors.
I find that after a short break in period for the cables to settle, the carbs will stay in sync for quite a long time unless the engine has work done on it.
I balance my carbs every 200hrs which is usually about every 3 months and they very rarely need to be adjusted.
I do think that the heat shrink tape is a very good Idea, although I have never tried it, I will use it in the future.
