Crack in crankcase

in 912 / 914 Technical Questions 13 years ago
My 912 ULS has this crack on the upper side of the crankcase, in the middle between the cylinder pairs.
Does anyone know what's behind this crack, inside of the engine?
Or - is there any drawing available to find out what is inside - any bearings, or just air?

    Hi Juergen,

    I would do a dye penetrant test to confirm the crack. If it is cracked they will usually keep growing over time and may cause more damage if left unchecked. If it is a crack you will need to replace the crankcase. Can you post a picture of the crack?
    Out of curiosity what is you max WOT rpm in flat and level flight?

    Hi, Roger,

    it is a crack. There`s oil coming out of it.
    It's not possible to buy a crankcase for the 912 as a spare part.

    Even it's not the recommended solution, it would like to have it welded. But that's only possible if there's nothing critical inside at this point.

    Welding most likely won't work because you can weld all the way through and the crack will grow. You will unfortunately need a new crankcase. You may need to send your engine to a distributor to get this work done. You have savable parts, plus you aren't stranded somewhere yet and if you weld it you may end up that way one day.
