voltmeter over reading?

In the cruise the volt meter is off the gauge (16+ volts) at idle it is 12 v.Any suggestions?

16v is a little high but not so high as to damage anything. It should be around 12.5-14v with the engine idling or at cruise. first thing to check is the voltage across the battery with the engine running. It should read very close to the same as the cockpit voltmeter. If it doesn't, it could just be a bad voltmeter. If the panel voltmeter is right, it could be the regulator. If it is a rotax regulator, try unplugging and replugging the wiring plug. sometimes this helps if the spade connectors are a bit corroded. If it is the regulator, they can't be repaired (and they are expensive). If the voltage continues to climb, it can damage electronics. You might check the battery connections as well. The rotax regulator requires a battery in the regulator circuit to operate properly. A bad battery connection could be telling the regulator that there is no battery in the circuit. there should also be at least one capacitor in the electrical wiring somewhere to provide a load from hot to ground in case of a battery failure. You might check these connections as well. Regulators rarely go bad and usually these issues can be traced to a wiring problem. Good luck.
