My 912UL does not have a choke but does use a primer. I do not have problems starting the engine. I know that this is not a typical set-up for these engines but it certainly works well for me and I don't understand why it is not used more frequently.

Yes, idle rpm ist 1400 1/min. and yes, if i inject fuel directly in to the synchronization nipples in the intake manifold the engine starts with out any problems. however i just think it should start with the choke as well, since it works on other 921 too. The installation of a primer would be considered a"major alteration" which ends up in a lot of paper work, plane grounding for two weeks and cost. :S

My 912UL only cold starts with the throttle fully closed and the choke fully engaged. It cranks for a second or two and then fires. I do have an electric fuel pump so that I can ensure that the float chambers are filled before starting.
Depending upon the temperature the choke can be eased in slowly to maintain smooth running.

Good topic. My 912 UL starts with throttle at idle and full choke without any problems, in temperatures above freezing. When the temp gets down below zero° C I warm the engine and the oil tank. Here in Canada I fly in temps down to - 25°C which is OK as long as the engine oil temp is above 180 F and the cyl. heads are warm. After 600+ hrs on the engine it keeps on ticking away just fine. I've had some problems with a sticky choke on the left carb which scared me the first time it happened but it's OK now. I've been on skis all winter and its a blast.

Make sure that the carb is in the fully closed position otherwise the choke circuit will not work. Also, I have found that my 914 need to have reall clean and correctly gapped plugs to start easily in cold weather.
