Loosen the inboard nuts on #2 cylinder (one of them is under the valve cover).These are the through bolts. If the engine rotates freely you have a fretted case.

Loss of material due to movement of crankshaft.
Can be from rough running; carb imbalance, gearset pitting (causes high freq vibration), out of balance prop, twisted crank or even excessive idling.
The case halves wear together (fret) and cause a loss of clearance on the crankshaft journal.

Thanks all for your help and insight. In the end, my engine is getting a new case due to fretting. Read that $$$$$.
