I know this is a dumb question, but I'm not clear when its suggested to adjust the idle jets. I thought the idle jets were fixed size. Any clarification would be great. My 582 still running rough at idle speeds. I"m able to sync the carbs pretty well at cruise.
The manometer will bring you closer to balance than any other method but on a 582 you can do an acceptable job without it.
1. make sure your idle air screws are set the same. Bing says to run them in gently until they stop and then back them out one turn. Exactly one turn because small changes here make a big difference at idle. The idle air screw is the small screw, The idle speed screw is the big screw.
2. Set the height of the slide for desired idle speed using the big idle speed screw. You can use a feeler gauge to make sure they are both the same height. (I use a particular phillips head screwdriver that works for me.)
3. Set the throttle cables by adjusting the brass screw on top of the carb. The idea here is to be sure that both slides start moving up at the same time. Do this with the engine off and just eyeball the slide movement while a buddy slowly advances the throttle.
4. Be sure that the slides are resting on the idle speed screw at idle and not hanging by the throttle cable. You should have a little play in the cable at idle; one or two mm. This insures that the slides will return to exactly to the same setting when you go to idle. You can check this by lifting the cable housing up and down at the top of the carb. It should move just slightly without moving the slide.
Idle speed screws the same, idle air screws the same, slides starting up together. This will almost always give you very close EGTs at cruise. My EGTs are within 10f of each other at cruise using this method.
