My selfstarting glider DG 400 is powered by a Rotax 505. After several years in use it should be figured out which brand of oil producers is the best for this engine. Castrol or Shell or ....?
"Back in the day" when two strokes dominated GP bikes there was a lot of work done which could fill volumes. Unfortunately the really good two stroke oils are no longer available. Partly due to the collapse of the Market, partly due to emissions reasons. Castrol was always considered the beast and i know of GP teams that were sponsored by "other" oil companies but used Castrol because they wanted to win.
So my experience would say Castrol over Shell definately
My recommendation would be Quicksilver PWC full synthetic 2 cycle oil. I run it in my fancooled DCDI 503 at 40-1 ratio. I flew 5 miles back to base after a broken fan belt and cht went to 650 and higher by the time I made the airport. Never once did it miss a beat and after pulling the exhaust to check things it still looked like new inside. New fan belt and flying it everyday possible. Rotax Rick is where I got the recommendation originally to use this oil and ratio. It is a stock Rotax 503 and not from a rebuilder so it's not anything special about it. Just giving my opinion on a real world test. I'm sold on it.
