Thought I'd update this.
On fitment of the new Mikuni fuel pump, the problem appears to have been resolved and the engine rpm remains steady. Fuel pressure seems a lot healthier and the electric pump can be switched off in the cruise.
Fuel lines were inspected and are ok.
