582 Life

Would a 582 -99 that is 8 years old and only 25 hours on it be past it's use by date wrt Calendar years.
It apparently has been run over this time, but would all the seals etc be loosing their elastic properties?
I realise we can do leak down, compression tests etc but that does not really indicate what real life is left.

    I would be concerned about a 582, or any two stroke that has ever sat for a period of time. They just don't store well. There is a procedure to prep them for storage that will allow you to have them out of service for a while but if that has not been done than I don't like the odds of that engine being dependable. The only way I would be comfortable with the engine would be to strip it down and replace the crankshaft. The bearings probably have some rust pitting.
    That being said I want to tell you that I fly behind a 582 and have for hundreds of hours. It is my engine of choice, a great little engine. I live in a northern climate and do more flying on skis than wheels. I love the fact that it is ready to go in -30 or +30 weather without any fuss.

    I agree with Dennis. A friend purchased an older 582 (still within hrs) and the crank bearing had some rust. He was still happy as he could use the rest of this engine as spare parts. Perhaps that's the best option with this engine.

    Thanks Dennis and Rhett,

    The seller has mentioned that it has been run regularly, not sure over 8 years what this means exactly but we can hear it running.
    As you mentioned that if it sat for 1 year without being turned manually the rust could damage the seals etc.
