Nick,
I've checked a lot of engines but I've never had to decoke one yet. I think you are probably right. The better brands of oil just don't cause a problem.

All done, no problems found, and thanks for your advice.
I swapped the plugs which have done 25 hours - they looked like new,(well nearly as they were exhibiting a light tan colour at the electrode indicating correct fuel mixture) but it's cheap insurance I reckon. No carbon build up to speak of on the piston crowns. Rings all good with plenty of oil coating all surfaces.
