It sounds like the wiring is right. The two wires from the engine supply AC volts to the regulator. The two going from the regulator to the battery. are DC voltage. If you can get the engine started, you don't have to disconnect the wiring to check it. If you have about 12.5 to 13.5 volts on the battery terminals with your engine running, the regulator is OK.
