582 Blue Head engine temp.

Recently bought a aircraft with bluehead 582. Previous owner used a cover to blank off one radiator to get engine temp up, Is this engine supposed to be run with a thermostat to regulate the temp? I always run one in the older 582's

    Lynn,

    Blueheads do have a thermostat. If it takes a long time to warm up on the ground, you could have a bad thermostat. You could take it out and put it in a pot of water on the stove and see if it works. Don't remember the temp. at which it begins but just put a thermometer in the water and see when it starts to move. Someone on the forum can probably give you the temp. Probably though, the radiator cover is the OK. The radiators are designed to cool the engine under very hot conditions and using a cover on the radiator is very common in cool or cold air temps. I have louvers on mine that can be adjusted from the cockpit.

    The thermostat stops water circulating through the radiators until it gets hot therefore if the water takes a long time to get hot it's because the t/s is allowing the water to circulate the rads too early. Blanking off the radiator/s does a similar job but when the engine is in motion. In a cold situation the t/s should be closed. If it looks like it would pass anything other than a trickle of water then it is duff.

    Thanks for the prompt information. Up to this point I have not even pulled the cover to see if it even has one installed. Will do that right away. Thanks again Lynn

    Some people remove thermostats Lynn so that the engine warms up more steadily and cover the rads to keep the engine hotter in colder or icy weather. Let us know how you get on.

    Lynn,

    found the specs on the thermostat. It begins to open at 135f. Stick it in a pot of water with a candy thermometer and you can see it begin to open at that temp. if it is working properly.
