It differs each time depending on where the oil is in the system and how warm it is so you want to keep moving it until it makes a gargling sound (like a burp) then you can measure the oil accurately with the dip stick. About a dozen compressions will probably do the trick sometimes more sometimes less. Rotate the prop slowly and slow down at the top of each compression to give air time to escape into the crankcase.
You want to check the oil before EVERY flight. Don't trust the oil pressure gauge when your life depends on an engine not cutting out when you're 150 ft in the air at takeoff.
Still in the dark. So burping is for more than checking oil level ? Somethings about ensuring no oil in cylinders ???
How does oil get in cylinders ?
Burping is just about checking oil level accurately and air escaping just forces the oil through I think (from the crankcase to the reservoir maybe?) but it's still a good idea to run a few compressions just so you can get a feel for them but that's not totally necessary like checking the oil is.
