Is your airbox intake routed to outside air? NACA duct? Scoop?
Maybe your filter is getting dirty or you have over-oiled it? It should not be that hot inside.
The 912/912S airbox is designed to improve the airflow to the carbs (as the induction manifolds are unequal by the nature of the 4 cylinder boxer layout).
It also provides carb heat and the perfect location for the float bowl reference hoses.
It also stabilizes the carbs to prevent frothing of the fuel if you don't have a soft start ignition.

Thanks, yes it is ducted to outside air at front of engine. I'll check my filter. Anything special I should look for in there?

if you find lots of pink oil near the filter it has been over-serviced. clean it and only put one bead of oil on each pleat, let it soak into the gauze for a few hours before touching up any white areas.
Also look for a collapsing or blocked scat duct.
Any recent changes to the cowl?
(I have to go on the road for a week, maybe someone can take over?)

I'll have a look thanks. yes the cowl was modified and thus was the fires flight. only the lower radiator intake was modified not the upper air intake though.

where is the induction intake? behind the rad?
