oil leak

in 912 / 914 Technical Questions 9 years ago
6 month old 912 uls engine with around 70hrs TTSN

It has oil leaking from all cylinder head joints at the bottom, dripping oil onto the coolant elbow that screws into the head between the push rod tubes.

It has leaked from new and is getting worse.

What is the best thing to do?

    Hi Mark,

    First things to try is retorque the heads. If that seems to stem most of the leaks them maybe increase a very small amount on the torque for the leaking ones. Don't get carried away with too much torque. If this didn't stop it maybe lap the heads where they meet. It takes a special hand tool and some lapping compound.

    p.s.
    What method are you using to measure torque?

    Hi Roger

    I haven't touched it yet.

    I would use 10Nm + 120 degrees with lubricated nuts (not mine :P ).

    I will give this a go first and see how it goes.

    What is the hand tool like to dress up the mating surface. Could you send me a pic please.

    Hi Mark,

    I don't think it's an official tool. I'll have to get a picture. Eric Tucker used to make them years ago and I have used them. I would just try torque for now it may cure all your problems.

    I've seen oil leaks like this from lugging the engine, nothing to do with sealing. The engine was run at full throttle then the RPMs were lowered to less than 5000 with a variable pitch prop to gain speed from the aircraft. This was causing excessive cylinder pressure and the following leakage.

    How is this engine being run?

    I'm not quite sure what you mean, but this is a sealing problem, with a ground adjustable Warp Drive prop fitted.
